Just finished Mel Bay, Book 2 and I'm beginning Book 3. Then I looked for supplementary material. Last week I bought Alfred's New Guitar Course, Book 3 based on other Amazon reviews and thought this looked like a great beginner's method. I promptly bought Books 1 and 2.These are wonderful books, with a great variety of tunes that are fun to play and listen to. New Guitar Course, Book 1 isn't that different from other beginning methods, but Book 2 shines. Technique and theory logically set out as songs gradually increase in difficulty. The variety of tunes include blues, gospel, folk, and even tangos.The only drawback is the lack of an accompanying CD or DVD. Alfred's revised basic method books are fine; this older series shines.
While not perfect, this is a great method. It is a notation focused traditional approach, but features a lot of 12-bar blues/rock type bits and such. It gets better into the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th books. The newest edition of the Alfred's Basic Guitar Method and other titles from Alfred actually use a lot of pieces from this old method. The new edition books add up to a worse method though. I'm very happy this is still in print, and this is one of my go-to methods for teaching notation for guitarists of any interest. Please buy this and not the newer Alfred books.
Unable to use. Written a manner that is much over my head. Too much of a gap between book 1 and book 2. The Hal Leonard Book 2 is a better book, in my experience.

One of my favorite methods, clear and concise.
I have a complete guitar course of books by d'Auberge & Manus. I am enjoying learning guitar from these books. Also, I completed the piano course by the same people.
